Julianne Bio
Julianne
Targan, mother of two,
has been studying and practicing yoga for 8 years. She is a
new yoga teacher, and lives in Califon, NJ
What
brought me to the
study of Yoga?
I
came to yoga with a need to be present for my young children and to
joyfully integrate the sacrifices of motherhood into my adult life
(i.e., I was a little ticked-off that I couldn’t go to the
bathroom by myself anymore). I also needed find a deeper
mind-body connection to mitigate stress and anxiety in my daily life.
What I’ve learned about
myself
I’ve
learned to better integrate my body and mind, to pay attention to
physical sensations and their relationship to my emotional
life. Compassionate choices guide me much more frequently now
than in the past, and I’ve gained the physical strength and
confidence to begin a journey in the martial arts. And,
thankfully, my children now let me go to the bathroom alone –
most of the time.
Yoga
styles
studied
My
first
yoga experience was with Himalayan Yoga Meditation. This type
of yoga practice goes beyond asana, and gave me a strong foundation in
alignment, an understanding of the importance of self acceptance, as
well as exposure to the historically larger meaning of yoga.
From there, I have practiced Ashtanga, Vinyasa Flow, Iyengar-based
asana, Shiva Rea’s Rasa yoga, and finally, Anusara yoga.
What I owe my
teachers
My
yoga teachers have had a profound influence on my journey as a yogi.
Each of them generously shared a piece of themselves with me, and from
each I felt supported and nourished as an individual. I feel
blessed to have been exposed to several different approaches to asana
practice. Currently, I’m working with Aylin Collier
(also a teacher at the Yoga Studio) to complete a one-on-one apprentice
style teacher training. I am very lucky to experience such a
long-term approach to certification, with a deeper level of study than
what’s often available to teacher
trainees.
My
teaching style and long-term teaching goals
My
teaching style is profoundly influenced by Anusara yoga, a
heart-centered alignment-aware style. I also work to
incorporate other influences as diverse as Tai-Chi-Chiuh and Chinese
temple exercises.
My
long term goals as a teacher are to focus on populations that really
need the gifts yoga has to offer – people who otherwise may
never be exposed to yoga, or who otherwise might not be able to afford
it. This includes incarcerated populations, and low wage
caregivers and teachers.
I consider it an honor
to have the opportunity to serve students at The Yoga Studio, where I
have spent – and continue to spend – so many joyful
hours in community with friends.
